The Department of Civil Engineering has a reputation for both engineering education and the advancement of knowledge through research, contributing to the creation and maintenance of civil infrastructure both within and outside of South Africa. Graduates of the Department are in high demand worldwide, and many are working far beyond our borders.
Over the last 50 years, the UP Civil Engineering Department has produced almost 40% of all civil engineers in South Africa. Over the years, many of these engineers have made significant contributions to South Africa’s progress and wealth generation. We are proud of our history and are building on our past accomplishments with a fresh vision and strategic direction for the future.
The BEng degree program is designed to satisfy, if not surpass, the requirements of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), which is the first step toward registration as a professional engineer. As a result, a BEng (Civil) degree from the University of Pretoria is a recognized qualification for working as an engineer far beyond South Africa’s boundaries.
Because the departmental staff is involved in research in all areas of civil engineering, the Department provides postgraduate courses in geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, railway engineering, and civil engineering materials. The Department now has 200 students enrolled in BEng(Hons), MEng, and PhD programs, many of which are natives of Southern African Development Community (SADC) member nations and elsewhere.
