Assisting nurses, doctors, and other team members in providing direct patient care, Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) are where many healthcare workers begin their careers. Those who want to become certified nursing assistants (CNAs) must follow the appropriate educational and licensing pathways. While each state has its own guidelines and requirements, the following are the most common ones that students must meet in order to become fully certified CNAs:

How To Get Certified As a CNA

  • Before becoming certified, prospective CNAs should be prepared to complete a state-approved CNA program at an accredited institution, despite the fact that state requirements vary. In order to ensure that a student receives the necessary knowledge and abilities to become licensed and provide patient care, approved programs meet the standards established by the state and other governing bodies. Students will need to verify that they have met all of their state’s certification requirements after finishing the program; The student must have completed a certain number of CNA training and clinical hours as part of their program in order to fulfill these requirements. Additionally, they will be required to complete fingerprinting and background checks, submit an application for CNA certification, and pay any applicable fees. It is essential to keep in mind that graduates of the CNA program will typically be required to submit their certification application within a predetermined time frame after completing training.

CNA Certification Exam

  • Students will be required to take the CNA certification exam in their state once they have successfully completed their training and submitted the necessary paperwork. There are two parts to the exam: the written or oral portion (given in a group setting) and the one-on-one clinical skills portion. Multiple-choice questions on topics like medical terminology, CNA roles and responsibilities, anatomy and physiology, and more are included in the written exam, which is typically administered by a third-party test proctor. The proctor of the clinical skills exam is typically a nurse or other practitioner. The proctor will ask the test taker to demonstrate a few skills, such as hand washing, measuring and recording a pulse, and other tasks (the proctor will choose from a list of more than 20).

CNA License & Certification Renewals

  • The typical CNA certification lasts for two years. The CNA’s certification can be renewed with the submission of a renewal form and fee as long as they have remained employed (the exact number of hours required to be eligible varies by state). Some states will allow a CNA’s certification to be renewed through a competency exam if the CNA does not meet the renewal requirements and their certification has not expired for more than two years. They will need to enroll in a CNA program and submit an application for a new license if the CNA’s certification has been expired for a significant amount of time or they are otherwise ineligible for renewal.
