In the past, the nursing profession and academic field have been dominated by women. Women’s roles in nursing include taking care of patients and maintaining equipment and wards. In 2021, women will make up 86% of Registered Nurses (RNs) in the United States, and women will make up 89% of the nursing workforce worldwide.
In the past, nurses had to work long hours and care for a lot of patients for little pay. Additionally, the typical university setting in which nurses learn the trade did not exist at the time. Instead, nurses practiced their skills on the job. Nursing students are referred to as probationers, which is an additional distinction. They were subject to the institution’s stringent rules and regulations because they were on probation. Additionally, probationers were required to carry out a variety of household chores and to abide by all physician orders without question. The probationers were then assigned to the operating room for a six-week rotation after learning how to take orders. During that six-week period, probationers learned to inventory sterile bandages, meticulously clean the operating room, and provide surgeons with sterile water during surgery. Probationers became nurses once their training was over.
When needed, one of their responsibilities as nurses was to educate patients about nutrition and diseases affecting children. In general, nurses were in charge of bathing patients, putting in catheters, giving medicines, giving enemas, cleaning the ward, and making sure everything was recorded correctly. There were no nurses’ aides available to assist with patient care on a daily basis at that time. As a result, the nurse was in charge of everything. A nurse was also responsible for preparing any holistic medications that were required at the time to treat the various alignments that patients presented with, adding to the lengthy list of tasks. Nowadays, holistic medications are rarely used, and pharmacies typically handle and prepare any necessary medications. This is in anticipation of the nurse preparing insulin, antibiotics, and intravenous (IV) medications on the floor (subject to a doctor’s order). Each nurse was responsible for 50 patients and was in charge of their nursing notes as well as keeping the ward clean. Here are some of the things they do every day:

The director of nursing will have good reason to question a nurse’s worth, intentions, and integrity if she smokes, drinks in any form, gets her hair done at a beauty salon, or goes to dance halls frequently.
The hospital administration will give the nurse who faithfully and without fault serves her patients and doctors for five years an increase of five cents per day, provided there are no outstanding hospital debts.
