In South Africa, the Department of Information Science is distinctive. Information Science, Multimedia, and Publishing Studies are three of our primary programs that include courses that are pertinent to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, economy, and trends of the information and knowledge era.
Knowledge Management, virtual reality, and electronic publishing are a few of the areas in which we have expertise. We also provide a Masters’s degree in information technology in addition to undergraduate and graduate programs in these fields (specializing in Library and Information Science).
We are the only department in the country that offers Publishing at the undergraduate level (in addition to postgraduate studies), the only department that offers Multimedia, and one of the major departments in the Republic of South Africa that offers Information Science (specifically Multimedia Programming, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level). Competitive Intelligence and Information and Knowledge Management are included in our information science undergraduate and honors programs. Our information and seminars are valued for their applicability and freshness.
Our sister departments in the School of Information Technology, the Departments of Informatics and Computer Science, and our membership in the iSchools Organization are both things we are extremely proud of.
For students who wish to engage in and contribute to the global information society, purchase and sell information, create information systems, and manage information products and services, information science is the perfect degree.

Program information
- The desire for more information and the growth of information needs have made it necessary to train information mediators to efficiently connect consumers with the information they need.
- This course is intended to teach students how to manage, retrieve, and organize information as well as how to enhance, package, and distribute it. It concentrates on the application of information technology and the processing of information products. Additionally, students will get the chance to gain knowledge and expertise in managing information and knowledge, one of the most crucial resources for businesses. Depending on the electives picked, a student has a choice of two or three specializations.
