There are more unregistered schools of higher learning giving degrees to unwary students now than ever before.

According to Blade Nzimande, minister of higher education, science, and innovation, the department is concerned about the growing number of unlawful colleges.
The public is therefore urged to exercise caution and avoid falling for shady businesses that don’t offer approved programs and are merely out to make a profit, he said.

Nzimande continued by pointing out that some recognized colleges also provide non-accredited, non-registered programs and credentials. Even if a college is registered, according to him, it is still required by law to make sure that the courses it offers are accredited and registered.
The minister also urged the public to be wary of organizations that claim to give “internationally recognized qualifications.”
According to the relevant Quality Councils in South Africa, “all programs and qualifications given by officially registered institutions must be accredited by them and must be reflected as such against the name of each institution that appears in the registers,” Nzimande said.
