Some institutions consider NBT results alongside the National Senior Certificate (NSC) for admission, while certain South African colleges use these tests to evaluate the level of learning support a student may need during their enrollment.

In higher education institutions, first-year students undertake examinations known as the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs). These tests aim to evaluate an individual’s capacity to adapt their academic literacy, quantitative literacy, and mathematical proficiency to the requirements of postsecondary education.

What should I study for NBTs?

  • No practice tests or specialized study guides are provided. NBT evaluates your existing knowledge and skills. Visit the NBT website to learn more about the topics covered. You only need to take the tests once, regardless of the number of universities you are applying to.
