• Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) was founded on January 1, 2005, as a result of the merger of the PE Technikon at the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE) and the Vista University Port Elizabeth campus (Vista PE).
• The PE Technikon evolved from the country’s oldest art school, the PE Art School, founded in 1882; the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE), the country’s first dual-medium residential university, founded on January 31, 1964; and the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University, which provided access to higher education to disadvantaged students.
• The government’s statewide higher education reform resulted in the merger of these schools, with the goal of delivering a more equal and efficient system to meet South Korea’s requirements.
