Established in 2003 through the consolidation of the Witbank, Middelburg, Mpondozankomo, and CN Mahlangu campuses (formerly Technical Colleges) in the Nkangala region, Nkangala TVET College became the largest educational institution in the Mpumalanga Province, catering to the Nkangala community. The Waterval boven Campus joined from Ehlanzen FET College in 2011, following the enactment of the FET Act by Parliament in 1996.
CN Mahlangu and Waterval Boven predominantly represent rural areas, with a significant student population hailing from the urban centers of Witbank and Middelburg, the most densely populated areas in the region. The rest of the students originate from former Kwa-Ndebele and Waterval Boven rural areas. In 2007, the college had 719 students enrolled in NC(V) programs and 11,917 students in Nated 191 courses, with over 95% of students coming from previously underserved backgrounds.
