Northlink College was founded in 2002 as a result of the merger of four colleges in the greater Cape Town metropolitan area, namely Wingfield Technical College (three campuses: Wingfield, Goodwood, and Table Bay), Tygerberg College (Tygerberg and Parow), Protea College, and Bellville Technical College. Northlink acquired Belhar College, a private institution, in 2005.

The name is a combination of “north” (reflecting the institution’s geographic location in Cape Town) and “link” (which describes the initial linking of the former colleges). More importantly, it demonstrates the critical link between school education and the world of work.
