nurse appreciation week 2024-2025
National Nurses Week always starts on May 6 and ends on May 12, which is Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Because of these definite dates, which facilitate planning, National Nurses Week has become a well-established commemoration occasion. May 8 has been recognized annually as Public Understudy Medical Attendants Day starting around 1998. In addition, every year on the third Wednesday of National Nurses Week, which takes place from May 6 to May 12, since 2003, National School Nurse Day has been observed.
Since 1896, the American Nurses Association (ANA) has supported and promoted the nursing profession. Every one of ANA’s state and regional medical caretakers affiliations advances the nursing calling at the state and provincial levels. On these dates, each organizes celebrations to honor nurses and the contributions they make to the community.
Through state and district nurses’ associations, other specialty nursing organizations, educational establishments, and independent health care businesses and institutions, the ANA supports and encourages National Nurses Week recognition programs.
A Brief History of National Nurses Week
May 6 was designated as “Nurses Day” by Brendon Byrne, governor of New Jersey in 1978. Edward Scanlan, a resident of Red Bank, New Jersey, took up the cause to maintain the state’s recognition of nurses. This date was listed in Chase’s Calendar of Annual Events by Mr. Scanlan. He alone promoted the celebration.
In 1981, the ANA and other nursing organizations came together to support a resolution that nurses in New Mexico, through their Congressman Manuel Lujan, had proposed to make May 6, 1982, “National Recognition Day for Nurses.”
1982 On May 6, 1982, the ANA Board of Directors officially declared it “National Nurses Day.” The action confirmed that May 6 would be designated as “National Recognition Day for Nurses” by a joint resolution of the United States Congress.
1982 On March 25, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation establishing May 6 as “National Recognition Day for Nurses.”
In 1990, the ANA Board of Directors established National Nurses Week, which ran from May 6 to May 12, 1991, to commemorate nurses.
In 1994 and every year after that, the ANA Board of Directors set the dates of May 6-12 as the permanent dates for National Nurses Week.
1996 On May 6, 1996, the American Nurses Association (ANA) established “National RN Recognition Day” to recognize the nation’s indispensable registered nurses for their unwavering dedication throughout the year. May 6, 1996, should be designated as “National RN Recognition Day” by the ANA’s state and territorial nurses associations and other organizations.
1997 The National Student Nurses Association urged the ANA Board of Directors to declare May 8 as National Student Nurses Day.
