The nursing profession is concerned with providing safe and high-quality healthcare while putting the patient’s needs first. Nursing has expanded in terms of the areas of healthcare it covers over time. Nursing is more than a job; it is a passion and a calling.

All interested students are encouraged to apply to the Western Cape College of Nursing before August 30, 2019.

The work nurses do

Nursing professionals are accountable for a variety of tasks, which may include:

  • administering injections, caring for wounds and performing personal patient interventions, interpreting patient information and issuing medication, performing administrative duties in collaboration with other health professionals such as doctors, monitoring healthcare trends, and contributing to improved practices.

Career options for nurses

As healthcare is frequently required in facilities other than hospitals and clinics, nurses have a variety of options. These may include:

  • schools and universities,
  • correctional facilities,
  • sporting events,
  • corporate companies,
  • shopping malls,
  • shelters for homeless persons, and
  • war zone camps and at sea.

You need to be qualified to practice nursing

To become a qualified nurse, you must first complete your studies at an accredited institution of higher learning. Nursing credentials differ between institutions. You must also ensure that the qualification and the institution where you are studying are both accredited by the South African Nursing Council (SANC).

A nursing degree opens up a world of opportunities, including employment in the local health sector, hospitals, clinics, non-governmental organizations, and opportunities abroad.

Nursing is a four-year full-time program. You will gain integrated learning and work experience at hospitals and other clinical facilities as part of your studies.
