NURSING SCHOOL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

1. Why do you want to become a nurse?

• The response to this question, “I want to help people!” has become cliche and overused over time. Be sincere, but precise. Additionally, the interviewer will not want to hear that you want to become a nurse because your maternal grandmother, aunt, and mother all worked as nurses.

2. What are some of your favorite pastimes or interests?

• The applicant’s response to this question may provide a more in-depth understanding of the interviewer’s personal interests. We all have different hobbies, so there is no wrong answer to this question. One candidate might enjoy cooking, while another might be a devoted musician. Again, be open and honest.

3. What would you do if you see a classmate stealing?

• This question was formulated to evaluate your ethical viewpoints and moral compass. A hint: The person conducting the interview doesn’t want to hear that you won’t talk about the situation.

4. A nurse is acting unethically at a clinical practicum site. How would you proceed?

• Your ethical perspectives and moral compass are also evaluated by this question. The interviewer won’t want you to keep quiet about the situation, but neither will they likely want you to ignore the hierarchy.

5. What are your personal strengths?

• There is no right or wrong answer to this question because each of us has a unique set of capabilities. Some candidates have a remarkable capacity to calm people’s fears, while others are skilled orators. While some people excel at problem-solving, others excel at individual pursuits like reading and computer skills.

6. What flaws do you personally have?

• First and foremost, every human being possesses at least one flaw. However, for the purpose of the upcoming interview, you will need to provide a strategy for addressing one or two socially acceptable weaknesses. Also, please don’t say ridiculously common phrases like “I work too hard!”

7. What would your former teachers and bosses think of you?

• The interviewer will gain some insight into your perceived work ethic and other people’s perceptions of you based on your response to this question. Using direct quotations will make your point stand out. Jane Smith, my current supervisor, would describe me as an honest worker who never complains.

8. Why are you interested in enrolling in our nursing program?

• When you demonstrate to the interviewer that you have previously conducted some research regarding the school, you have the opportunity to shine. Since its first class graduated in 1978, this nursing school has produced many excellent nurses. I would be honored to receive my nursing education here.

9. If you had difficulty in a nursing class, what would you do?

• The answer to this question tries to figure out how resourceful you are and whether you’re more likely to ask for help when you need it. Students who speak up when they don’t understand something and take responsibility for their learning are preferred to those who passively wait for things to happen. To put it another way, the interviewer wants to know how you deal with difficult situations.
• Additionally, candidates who have a propensity to exaggerate their difficulties will not do well in interviews. A candidate who externalizes personal issues may or may not make the statement, “I got a D grade in anatomy because I had a bad professor.”

10. If you were in conflict with a professor, what would you do?

• The person conducting the interview is attempting to ascertain your level of maturity, interpersonal skills, and personal approach to conflict resolution by asking this question. Students who have reached maturity will attempt to resolve disagreements without escalating the situation too far up the hierarchy. To put it another way, before going to the director of nursing education, chair of the nursing department, or dean, try to resolve the issue with the professor.
