This page will give you information about the university of cape town 2024-2025.

Entry requirements:

  • Master’s degree or a comparable degree.
In the right circumstances, admission through the recognition of prior learning is possible. Such admission is considered and decided in accordance with the RPL policy, and it requires the support of the HOD and the Director: of Graduate Studies approval.

Application procedure:

  • Each applicant must submit a proposal to the admissions office along with the official UCT application form. The proposals and supplemental materials are sent from Admissions to the Faculty Office, where they are then directed to the appropriate HOD. The Faculty Office receives a recommendation from the HOD regarding the applicant’s suitability for the degree.

Registration procedure:

  • The Faculty Office processes the registration. Before the registration is finished and recorded on the system, the student is required to complete an MOU/PPA and obtain the signatures of the Programme Convenor/HoD and the Dean’s representative (Deputy Dean: Research, Director: Graduate Programmes, or Graduate Programmes Officer). Such a student may be provisionally registered for a period of six months before the registration is reviewed, if the HDC’s recommendation is for a provisional registration pending further work on the proposal. Only a revised proposal that has been submitted and approved by the HOD will result in the extension of provisional registration. The registration will be canceled if no revised proposal is submitted.

Appointment of supervisors:

The HDC proposes supervisors at the meeting where the application is decided. The Faculty Office forwarded the HOD’s recommendation for the proposed supervisor for approval to the Director: Graduate Studies. After that, the Dean’s Circular publishes it.

Progression:

  • The performance of continuing students is evaluated yearly. Supervisors must confirm through the HDC that progress has been satisfactory before recommending re-registration in subsequent years (October each year). The HOD updates the Faculty Examinations Committee on the status of registered Ph.D. candidates.
  • For each student, the faculty office enters the proper code. The Re-admission Committee notifies students whose progress has been determined by the supervisor and HDC to be unsatisfactory that re-registration is not permitted. Students who take longer than advised to complete their degrees are also informed of this.

Examination procedures:

  • The Doctoral Degrees Board oversees the examination of doctoral theses. Candidates must notify the DDB of their intention to submit by the deadlines specified. The DDB asks supervisors for examiner nominations after receiving such notice. The Doctoral Committee of Assessors must approve nominations for faculty approval before sending them to the Doctoral Degrees Board for final approval. These are delivered to DDB for review.
