  • Grants given by the government to South African citizens in need are referred to as social grants. SASSA is responsible for managing social grants in South Africa. Social grants are provided to those who are at risk of poverty and in need of government assistance in an effort to raise the standard of living in society. These typically include the elderly, those with disabilities, and those who are parents of young children. All applicants for social grants must be South African citizens, lawful permanent residents, or refugees (proof of such status must be provided). They must also be residents of South Africa.

What is a means test?

  • There is a “means test” for some social grants, including child support grants, disability grants, care dependency grants, and grants for social relief of distress. The means test’s purpose is to ascertain whether you are qualified to apply for a social grant; SASSA will assess your income and assets to ascertain your eligibility. The means test merely establishes your eligibility for a grant intended for those without sufficient resources to support themselves.

Care dependency grant

Grants for care dependency are available to help full-time parents of disabled children. How much money is being awarded through this grant?

  • R1 860 per child, per month.

How do you know if you qualify for the grant?

  • The child must be under 18 and have been determined to be permanently disabled by a medical officer in order to be eligible for the care dependency grant. If you’re married, both you and your spouse need to meet the means test’s minimum eligibility requirements. The list of helpful articles that will aid in your Sassa application is provided below.
