SASSA on cards being valid beyond 31 March 2021

  • The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) denies false information and assertions made on social media that the SASSA-SAPO Card will expire on March 31. These assertions are untrue. The SASSA Cards will continue to function after March 31.
  • The SA Reserve Bank report indicates that the cards will need to be replaced, but there is no deadline by which this must be done. In due course, information regarding the new card will be made available to the public.
  • There is nothing requiring SASSA clients who are currently paid through the South African Post Office (SAPO) to switch to bank accounts; they are free to choose their preferred method of payment. After April, they will continue to be compensated with the current SASSA-SAPO card.
