  • The University of Johannesburg (UJ), which bears the name of the global city of Johannesburg, is vibrant, multiracial, and dynamic. The university, which is proudly South African, is deeply rooted in Africa and is well-equipped to play a part in realizing the potential that higher education holds for the advancement of the Continent. With more than 50 000 students, more than 3000 of them international students from 80 different countries, UJ has evolved into a diverse, inclusive, transformative, and collegial school. Out of the 26 public universities that make up the South African (SA) higher education system, this places UJ is one of the largest contact universities.

Recent developments such as the state-of-the-art buildings accommodating the School of Tourism and Hospitality, the Faculty of Art, Design, and Architecture, and the modern Arts Centre [comprising a theatre and gallery] are to the benefit of not only UJ but also the Johannesburg community at large. The combined facilities available at the University are among the best in the country and include libraries, micro-laboratories, and sports and culture facilities. Many of UJ’s facilities such as the restaurants, conference venues, and the art theatre and gallery are commercially driven and open to the general public.

UJ has four campuses, all of which are in the metropolitan area of the City of Johannesburg: the campuses at Auckland Park Kingsway, Auckland Park Bunting Road, Doornfontein, and Soweto.

The campuses range in size, and each has a unique personality and culture that add to the school’s vibrant diversity. To make the best utilization of all campuses, a thorough development plan has been created. This will guide the expansion and development of five sites for the delivery of higher education, each with a distinct academic program profile and capacity but a common goal of providing top-notch tertiary education.

The opening of the Soweto Centre for Small and Medium Business Enterprise Development on the Soweto Campus has generated a lot of excitement. The Center is the first stage of the Johannesburg School of Leadership, which is the campus’s most prominent developer and has a special concentration on an exploration of African leadership.

The modern Arts Centre [which includes a theatre and gallery] and other recent projects, such as the state-of-the-art facilities housing the School of Tourism and Hospitality, and the Faculty of Art, Design, and Architecture, are advantageous to both UJ and the greater Johannesburg community. The University’s total facilities, which include libraries, small laboratories, and facilities for sports and the arts, are among the best in the nation. Numerous UJ amenities, including cafes, meeting rooms, art galleries, and theaters, are run for profit and accessible to the public.
