• The School of Health Systems and Public Health (SHSPH) is a student-centered institution that uses educational research to inform teaching and learning. It is dedicated to inspiring public health excellence globally through its research activities, while also enriching the lives of South Africans and Africans in general.
• The SHSPH is committed to graduating a new generation of public health professionals by delivering context-driven education and training that is governed by societal needs as informed by the SDGs and helped by new technologies brought about by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

• Public Health Medicine is concerned with the administration of population-oriented clinical services aimed at enhancing community health and disease prevention, as well as teaching public health and preventive medicine across disciplines and doing research to promote population health.
• The UP Department of Public Health Medicine (PHM) was founded in the 1980s to coordinate undergraduate instruction in the college of health sciences as well as the M Med specialization program in Public Health Medicine, which trains doctors as Public Health Medicine specialists. It also provides a doctoral program in Public Health Medicine (PhD and DMed). Through undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral instruction that prepares students for the challenges of working in the South African health system, as well as community engagement initiatives, the Department is tightly integrated with the service platform in the Steve Biko Academic Hospital cluster.
• Departmental staff (Public Health Medicine specialists, registrars, medical officers, and clinical associates) provide clinical services to the Steve Biko Academic Hospital and associated cluster health institutions, including Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital. Furthermore, the Departmental staff assists the Gauteng Provincial Department of Health and the South African National Department of Health with its efforts. Disease prevention (communicable illnesses, non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health), clinical public health (clinical health informatics, medical management, clinical economics), occupational and environmental health, and social medicine are some of its activities.
• The Department also funds a wide range of research targeted at promoting public health and preventive medicine practice, and it has several cooperation with other research institutions, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations. The Department is in close collaboration with the UP COPC Research Unit as well as the WHO Collaborating Centre for Social Determinants of Health and Health in All Policies.
