In relation to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) was created. NSFAS is a bursary program that provides financially disadvantaged and working-class South African students with totally free higher education and training.

The mission of NSFAS is to provide financial aid to students from low-income and working-class households so they can begin their studies at public universities and TVET colleges.

DATA ON THE NSFAS PROGRAM

  • Former president Jacob Zuma said that the South African government would gradually implement “fully backed free higher education and training for poor and working-class South African students” on this date, 16 December 2017. The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) Bursary Scheme was created in order to provide funding that would be phased in over a period of five years.

THE FOLLOWING ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Before applying, students should make sure they match the following minimum entry requirements:

  • an African-American
    Receive a grant from SASSA
    The annual total household income is R350 000 or less.
    applying to a public university or TVET college
    Currently enrolled in a university and earning less than R122,000 annually overall
    passed the ninth and tenth grades to qualify for financing to attend TVET College.
    passed high school to qualify for money to attend university
    enrolling for the first time in an undergraduate program at a public university or enrolling in a National Certificate Vocational program at a public TVET college

If you fit the following description, DO NOT apply:

  • Foreign student (NOT a South African citizen)
  • Total household income is over R350 000 per annum
  • Completed a previous tertiary qualification
  • Already applied and received funding

COVERAGE VALUE

These study-related costs will be covered by the DHET Bursary:

  • Registration fee
  • Tuition fee
  • Subsidized book allowances
  • Prescribed learning materials (up to a certain amount, as set by NSFAS)
  • Subsidized accommodation (up to a certain amount, as set by NSFAS)
  • Subsidized meal allowances

HOW TO APPLY NSFAS

METHOD 2: At the nearby NYDA Center

  • Visit the nearest NYDA office or center. A representative will walk you through the application process and provide you a form to fill out.
    3) Fill out the application in CAPITAL letters, sign your name where indicated, and date it.
    4) Submit your application and any accompanying paperwork (as listed below). Make sure that the front of all of your supporting documents is certified and that they are no more than three months old.
    5) A receipt card with a bar code will be provided to you.

METHOD 3: In a computer lab or financial aid office on campus

ACCORDING TO DOCUMENTS

The following supporting documents must be submitted in clear copies; if any are missing, your application will be rejected. Submission of these documents is required.

  • ID card or document (certified copy and electronic copy)
    birth certificate in full (if you do not have an ID document or ID card) both an electronic and certified copy
    IDs for parents and/or guardians (certified copy and electronic copy)
    Death certificate for the parents or guardians (if applicable) both an electronic and certified copy
    Payslips, letters of employment, and pension advice (not older than 3 months) (Never turn in SASSA slips. SASSA ought to be taken out of household income) (certified copy and electronic copy)
    Contact information (cell phone number or email address) so that NSFAS can get in touch with you during the application process and let you know how your application fared
  • Parents’ or guardians’ completed and signed NSFAS Consent Form in pdf
    Complete and submit the NSFAS Disability Annexure A if you are disabled (.pdf)
    Fill out the NSFAS Declaration Form (.pdf), have a social worker from the Department of Social Development sign it, and send it to an Isibindi Center or NYDA office if the child is orphaned.
