Why is nursing important to me? Nursing entails assisting patients in healing, attending to their requirements while they are under your care, listening to their concerns, shielding them from harm, instructing them on self-care, and treating them with dignity, compassion, and respect. Nursing is devoting oneself completely to the care of patients and the community. Being humanitarian, caring about people and their health, and ensuring that patients receive the best possible care are all part of it. Because families of patients are also going through a difficult time, nurses must treat them with compassion and understanding. Regardless of the patient’s age, race, religion, sex, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or past, nursing is obligated to provide the best care. For nurses to provide high-quality care, they need to stay up to date on education, new procedures, policies, and healthcare-related laws and regulations. As a nurse, you have taken on the responsibility of providing patients with the highest quality care possible.

Because you are a nurse, you are compassionate and caring, and you want to help other people, it is your duty and obligation to assist anyone you see who is in need. Not only because you can, but also because you are a nurse and you want to help other people. Because of this, when a patient comes back to your unit after being discharged to say, “Thank you for caring for me, you saved my life,” or when a family thanks you for taking care of a loved one who died, you smile. Even if you don’t get thanked every day, it’s worth it every time. Reminiscing is a way to look back on your life and feel good about having made a difference in people’s lives. Even if things didn’t go according to plan, you lost some patients, but more made it through because you did your best and that is good.

What does it mean to be a nurse?

Constant monitoring of vital signs and patient care. That immediately comes to mind. However, nursing is much more than that. It entails empathy, sensitivity, compassion, and patience. It entails being there for a complete stranger at any time of day or night. It is this capacity to aid in maintaining a patient’s loved one’s composure even in the most stressful of circumstances.

Leaders are nurses. They are professionals and good communicators. They are a patient’s advocate and confidant. What else does being a nurse entail? We posed this question to our students and nurse educators. Some of their responses are as follows:

“To me, nursing is selflessness. Our patient is our priority through our intelligence, experience and compassion. We are the healing hands that people seek in desperate times.”

-Maggie R.

It means you put the patient first and yourself last! It means you have responsibilities to humanity..”

-Robin F.

“Nursing is not a job. Being a nurse means patients in your care must be able to trust you. It means treating your patients and colleagues with respect, kindness, dignity and compassion.”

-Gertha F.

“Loving to serve! Taking care of your patient as if it were your precious family member. It also means you go to work to make a positive difference, not just earn a paycheck.”
