Situated on the northern outskirts of the city center is the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, a multi-campus public research university commonly referred to as Wits University or simply Wits. The university, like Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand region, has a history rooted in mining. Established in Kimberley in 1896 as the South African School of Mines, it is the third-oldest South African university still in operation.
Dates for admission opening and closing for Wits Application
- Admissions applications for the class of 2024 are accepted from May through August.
The Application Fee Must Be Paid
- For South African nationals, there is a non-refundable application fee of R100.
- For foreign citizens, there is a non-refundable application fee of R700.
- Payments must be made before the deadlines.
- Use your Person Number or T Number as a reference.
Please include any supporting documentation.
- You can now upload supporting documents via the student self-service portal at https://self-service.wits.ac.za if you did not when you applied.
- Enter the first six digits of your ID as well as your personal number (not your T number) to log in.
- Students currently enrolled: Submit your Grade 11 final grades (no hardcopy required).
- Already registered? All of your matriculation/exit certificates should be uploaded in certified copy format.
- Additional Postsecondary Institutions: For ALL Tertiary Registrations, upload a certified copy of your official transcripts, along with a statement or certificate attesting to your good moral character that has been stamped by the registrar of your school. (Please note that GEMP applicants’ interim, self-service generated results will only be taken into account for initial assessment purposes.)
