In Sandton, Gauteng, South Africa, there was a campus of Bond University Australia called Bond South Africa.

After successfully launching distance learning in the early 1990s and expanding to SADC nations, the campus closed in 2004. For the past several years, Bond South Africa has been authorized to award undergraduate and MBA degrees.

The Council of Higher Education (CHE) denied accreditation to Bond SA and nine other business schools for their MBA programs because they did not adhere to minimum requirements.

Briefly stating that Bond SA did not meet the new requirements put in place, a spokesperson for the chairperson of the Council of Higher Education stated that the MBA programs would need to be phased out and that applications for re-accreditation could start after two years. He continued by saying that prior certifications, degrees, and diplomas would continue to be recognized in accordance with previously established standards.

The owners of Bond SA criticized the criteria, claiming that they placed too much emphasis on the application process and not enough on the quality of the coursework that produced the graduation results.

Vice Chancellor of Bond University in Australia expressed displeasure.

“The council’s decision would only add to the lack of access that African universities have to high-quality foreign expertise and learning practices. All Bond qualifications are highly appraised by foreign countries and we had hoped to pave a path forward for African students seeking professional private education. This will not affect the qualifications earned by the thousands of students who have completed campus and distance learning programs. (Bond Australia) is not prepared to compromise the quality of its internationally recognized diplomas and degrees, to conform with process issues in one country of the world.”
