- Travelbee began her nursing career in 1945 after graduating from St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing in Santa Monica, California. She later earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Colorado in 1958 and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1966.
- In 1966, Travelbee published her seminal work, “Interpersonal Aspects of Nursing,” which introduced her human-to-human relationship model of nursing. According to this model, nursing is not just a series of technical tasks but a therapeutic process that involves a human-to-human relationship between the nurse and patient. The model emphasized the importance of understanding the patient as a unique individual and providing care that is tailored to their individual needs.
