- The South African government provides social subsidies to residents in need. The SASSA is in charge of social grants in South Africa. People who are at risk of going hungry and need government support to raise their level of living can apply for social subsidies. Oftentimes, these include the elderly, those with impairments, and parents of young children. To be eligible for a social grant, you must be a South African citizen, lawful permanent resident, or refugee (proof of such status must be provided). Additionally, they must be South African citizens.
What is a means test?
- For various social grants, such as child support, disability, care dependency, and social alleviation of distress, the SASSA will use the means test to determine your eligibility based on your income and assets. The means test determines your eligibility for a grant designed for people who cannot afford to live independently.
Care dependency allowance
Grants for care dependence may be available to parents with handicapped children who work full-time. What total amount of funding will be distributed as part of this grant?
- R1 860 per child, per month.
How do you know if you’re eligible for the grant?
- The child must be under the age of 18 and permanently disabled, as determined by a medical officer, in order to qualify for the care dependency grant.
