The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is a non-profit organization that acts as a conduit for nursing regulatory bodies to collaborate on issues of shared interest that have an impact on the public’s health, safety, and welfare, such as the creation of nursing licensure examinations.
U.S. Board of Nursing (BON) States: Where to Apply?
- A U.S. Board of Nursing (BON) application is required before you can even apply to take the NCLEX-RN exam. After that, the BON you applied to will allow you to register for and take the NCLEX-RN. After passing the NCLEX-RN exam and meeting any other requirements, you will be granted an RN license in this state!
- The requirements for each Board of Nursing vary from state to state in the United States. All of our candidates should conduct some research to determine whether BON is the best match for them. Some, for instance, will ask you to have a Social Security Number (SSN), while others will require you to have a higher level of education than others. Since each BON’s requirements can change at any time, it’s always a good idea to know what you need to do.
- Candidates frequently inquire whether they will be restricted to working only in the state where they applied for their U.S. license with the BON. The answer is clearly no. Conexus MedStaff will endorse your license to the state where you will work in the United States if we place you in a state in the United States that is different from your license. In the United States, it is not unusual for a registered nurse to hold multiple licenses from various states.
We recommend that you avoid applying with states that require you to have an SSN if you haven’t decided yet which U.S. state BON to apply with. This will make the process longer and more complicated. These states include right now:
- California
- Maryland
- Vermont
- Arizona
