In 1998, as part of its transformation policy for technical colleges in the Western Cape, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) consolidated the 15 existing institutions into six massive Further Education and Training (FET) Colleges. Subsequently, these colleges were renamed Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges under the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). Among them, three are situated in Cape Town, while the remaining three are located in rural areas.
Boland College, classified as a rural college, comprises five campuses: Caledon, Paarl, Stellenbosch, Strand, and Worcester, with its central administration in Stellenbosch. Before the merger, four of these campuses operated as independent and competitive colleges, each boasting a distinguished history of excellent education and results, along with some autonomy. The consolidation process was completed in 2001, and a fifth campus in Caledon was inaugurated in January 2002. All these campuses are equipped with excellent facilities.
