Biography of Sister Callista Roy
- In Los Angeles, Sister Callista Roy was born in 1939. She graduated from Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Nursing in 1963. In 1966, she procured a Graduate degree in Pediatric Nursing from the College of California-Los Angeles. In addition, she completed a Master’s degree in sociology in 1973 and a Doctorate in sociology in 1977. She is St. Joseph of Carondelet’s sister.
- Roy joined Mount St. Mary’s College’s faculty in 1996 after holding administrative and staff nursing positions at St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson, Arizona, and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lewiston, Idaho. She also headed the department from 1971 to 1982.
- Roy contributed to the development of a nursing master’s program while employed at the University of Portland. What’s more, at the Connell School of Nursing, she was engaged with fostering a Ph.D. program in Nursing. She also taught as a visiting professor at universities all over the world, including the University of Conception in Chile, the University of Lund in Sweden, and La Sabana University in Colombia.
- Roy was a member of the International Network for Doctoral Education’s Board of Directors from 2003 to 2006. She is also a Faculty Senior Nurse Scientist at the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Yvonne L. Munn Center for Nursing Research.
- Roy has published over 100 works, 11 of which have been translated into 12 languages, since she developed her Adaptation Model of Nursing. She has received four Honorary Doctorates, numerous teaching awards, and STTI, NANDA, and NLN national awards. Roy received the Carondelet Medal from Mount St. Mary’s College in 1995 for her contributions to nursing. She was elected to the American Academy of Nursing in 1978, where she continues to be an active Fellow.
Sister Callista Roy’s Contribution to Nursing Theory: Adaptation Model of Nursing
- The Adaptation Model of Nursing, developed by Roy in 1976, has three primary questions: Who does nursing care focus on? What is the objective of nursing care? and when should nursing care be given? This model glances at the patient according to a comprehensive point of view.
- The human being, adaptation, and nursing are the three ideas underlying her model. There are four different types of adaptation: physiology, self-perception, role performance, and interdependence.
- The physical body’s upkeep is the focus of the physiological mode. This encompasses essential human necessities like food, water, air, and temperature control. The need to maintain one’s mind is a function of the mode of self-concept. This mode includes the person’s perceptions of his or her physical and personal self. The role-playing mode emphasizes social integrity. This focuses on how people adapt to changing roles over the course of their lives. Social integrity is also addressed by the interdependence mode. In this mode, a person’s relationships with others must strike a balance between independence and interdependence.
- The goal of nursing, according to Roy’s model, is to help the patient adapt to both health and illness in all four modes. The nurse’s actions begin with a two-level assessment. The nurse begins by determining whether or not there is maladaptation. Second, the medical caretaker centers around the improvements impacting the patient’s maladaptive way of behaving. As part of their nursing care plan, the nurse then takes actions to help the patient adapt by manipulating the environment, parts of the patient’s system, or both.
