A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who specializes in administering anesthesia to patients for surgical or other medical procedures. CRNAs are highly skilled healthcare professionals who work in collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare providers to provide safe and effective anesthesia care.
CRNAs are responsible for:
- Assessing patients before administering anesthesia and developing an individualized anesthesia plan
- Administering various types of anesthesia, including general, regional, and local anesthesia
- Monitoring patients throughout surgery to ensure their safety and comfort
- Managing the patient’s airway and breathing during anesthesia administration
- Managing pain and other post-operative symptoms
- Providing education and counseling to patients and their families about anesthesia and pain management
To become a CRNA, an individual must first obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree and then complete a graduate-level program in nurse anesthesia. This program typically takes two to three years to complete and includes both classroom and clinical training. After completing their education, CRNAs must pass a national certification exam to become licensed to practice.
