Nurse practitioners (PNs) and registered nurses (RNs) with unrestricted compact nursing licenses are permitted to practice freely without requiring a new license for each state. Being able to move quickly from one state to another is essential to your job as a travel nurse.
The Nursing Licensure Compact started out with 25 states. With the help of a compact nurse license issued by their home state, multistate nurses were able to work in multiple states. Then, in 2018, the original agreement was improved by the eNLC, and since then, more than ten states have joined the Compact.

Where could I at any point work with a multistate nursing permit?
- Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and any of the eNLC states allow for compact nursing. You can begin working as a travel nurse, a disaster relief nurse, or a telehealth nurse for patients in multiple states once you have earned your compact nursing license.
- The flexibility of practicing as an RN without having to go through the licensing process multiple times is the primary reason nurses seek compact licensure.
- When nurses wanted to treat patients in a different state, they would have to apply for new licenses without the NLC. You only need to apply for one compact nurse license in your home state if you have a compact license. After that, you can work as a nurse in any state that has adopted the eNLC.
