The National Student Financial Aid Initiative (NSFAS) is a funding scheme for low-income students who want to continue their education at a postsecondary level.
Durban University of Technology is one of the tertiary institutions that they cover, as are all of South Africa’s 26 public universities.
So, if you are a DUT student in need of financial assistance, NSFAS can assist you. However, there is a set of requirements that must be completed in order to be sponsored by NSFAS.
- NSFAS is open to all South African citizens.
All SASSA grantees are eligible for financing.
Applicants with a combined household income of less than R350 000 per year
Individuals having a disability: The combined household income cannot exceed R600,000 per year.
Students who began their studies prior to 2018 and have a household income of less than R122 000 per year.
NSFAS covers:
- Accommodation
According to the university’s real costs (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence) - Transport (up to 40 km from institution) R7 500 per annum
- Living allowance R15, 000 per annum
- Book allowances R5200 per annum
- For students living in catered residences, the incidental/personal care allowance is R2900 per year.
NSFAS provides bursaries to impoverished students in South Africa to ensure that if you qualify to study, you can do so without the stress of having to support yourself.
