  • The National Student Financial Aid Scheme is a student financial aid scheme that provides financial assistance to needy undergraduate students to help pay for their education costs. The NSFAS is supported by the South African Department of Higher Education and Training.
  • The Scheme was established in 1996, and in 1999 it replaced the Tertiary Education Fund of South Africa (TEFSA).

TEFSA was a non-profit organization that managed and administered NSFAS from its inception until 2000. TEFSA was transformed into a statutory body called NSFAS in 1999.

Tuition fees, housing, food, and travel allowances are all covered by bursaries for “full-time” students, but only tuition fees are covered for “part-time” students.
