Nurses can better collaborate with their patients and, ultimately, provide better care for them if they understand the nurse-patient relationship. The nurse-patient relationship is the focus of Hildegard Peplau’s nursing model, which identifies the various roles nurses play when working with patients.

Biography of Hildegard Peplau

  • In the year 1909, Hildegard Peplau was born in Pennsylvania. She saw firsthand the devastating effects of the 1918 flu pandemic, which significantly shaped her understanding of how illness and death affected families.
  • She moved on from the Pottstown, Pennsylvania School of Nursing in 1931 and filled in as staff nurturer in Pennsylvania and New York City. Peplau received a recommendation to work as a school nurse at Bennington College in Vermont after a summer position. In 1943, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Interpersonal Psychology. She was certified in psychoanalysis at the William Alanson White Institution in New York City and received her Master’s and Doctoral degrees from Teacher’s College, Columbia University.
  • On March 17, 1999, Peplau passed away.

Career of Hildegard Peplau

  • Peplau studied psychological issues with Erich Fromm, Frieda Fromm-Reichmann, and Harry Stack Sullivan at Chestnut Lodge, a private psychiatric facility, after earning her Bachelor’s degree. Peplau’s lifelong work expanded Sullivan’s interpersonal theory to include nursing applications. From 1943 to 1945 Peplau filled in as a Military Corps Medical attendant. She was able to collaborate with prominent psychiatric professionals in both the United States and Great Britain while she was stationed at the 312th Field Station Hospital in England.
  • She developed and taught the first graduate nursing students’ classes at Teachers College in the early 1950s. From 1954 to 1974, she taught in the College of Nursing at Rutgers University. There, she established the first graduate program for clinical psychiatric nursing specialists. She taught individual, family, and group therapy as well as interpersonal concepts and interviewing techniques to nurses across the United States in summer workshops in the 1950s and 1960s.
  • Peplau was a visiting professor at universities all over the United States and the world and served as an advisor for the World Health Organization. She worked as a consultant for the National Institutes of Mental Health, the Air Force, and the Surgeon General of the United States. She also participated in the government of the United States’ policy-making groups.
  • Peplau helped establish the first European graduate nursing program at the University of Leuven in Belgium, where she was a visiting professor in 1975 and 1976, after she left her position at Rutgers.

Hildegard Peplau’s Contribution to Nursing Theory: The Theory of Interpersonal Relations

  • Seven nursing roles depict the dynamic character roles typical of clinical nursing and were included in Peplau’s model for nursing, which assisted subsequent nursing theorists and clinicians in developing additional therapeutic interventions.
  • These are the seven nursing roles: the stranger role, in which the nurse meets the patient like a stranger would and creates a trusting environment for them; the role of resource, in which the nurse provides information, interprets data, and answers questions; the teaching position, in which the nurse instructs and instructs others; the counseling role, in which the nurse assists the patient in comprehending the significance of the current circumstances and offers direction and encouragement to encourage change; the surrogate role, in which the nurse represents the patient as an advocate; the nurse’s active leadership role, in which she assists the patient in accepting responsibility for achieving treatment objectives; and the technical expert position, in which the nurse gives the patient physical care and uses equipment.
  • Learning Hildegard Peplau’s nursing model can be very helpful to people who want to work with people. They will be able to apply various roles in a variety of situations if they have a better understanding of the seven roles of nursing. This will ensure that their patients receive the best possible care and, in the end, will accelerate treatment and recovery.
