- Usually, twice per week, unless they get dirty in between. The skin conditions of some patients necessitate more frequent bathing. Because the skin of elderly people is extremely dry and fragile, taking a bath every day is typically more harmful than beneficial.
- Every day, residents at my home can choose between a bed bath, or a shower. Because pressure area care is so important, personal care is given throughout the day, especially if they are dirty and need to be freshened up. When the resident gets up in the morning, new sheets are put on their beds. Infection control practices are adhered to by good household practices and clean rooms with the windows open. Soiled linen goes into red plastic bags that dissolve in the machine at a temperature that is controlled by policy and is washed separately in separate washes. The goal is to stop the infection from spreading.
- It is entirely up to the individual how often they bathe. But…. a “legal” number exists.
- The majority of states mandate that showers be provided at least twice per week. However, at least one person will always absolutely refuse to enter! I was always mad because of it. We can’t force someone to take a shower against their will, and sometimes the only way to get soapy water and a washcloth on the stinkiest parts is to use every trick in the book. The state inspectors will make a statement about it if it is well documented, but you won’t be in too much trouble.
- In nursing homes, beds will be changed on shower days. The mattress will be cleaned with disinfectant wipes and any home linens will be replaced. They might not be taken to the laundromat if they bring their own blankets or quilts.
