Registered nurses who work as medical-surgical nurses tend to mostly adult patients before and after surgical procedures. They administer medications, coordinate healthcare plans with medical professionals, and educate patients about surgical procedures. They can work in medical offices, clinics, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities.

Responsibilities of a Medical-Surgical Nurse:
  • collaborating with healthcare professionals to evaluate, plan, implement, and assess patient care plans.
    Assessing clinical data, as well as giving immediate and individualized bedside nursing care to pre-and post-medical procedure patients.
    Preparing, giving, and keeping track of prescribed medications.
    putting on a new dressing, putting in a catheter, and starting an IV.
    interpreting and recording measurements, as well as making any necessary adjustments to specialized medical equipment.
    Keeping an eye on the vital signs of the patients and promptly reporting any medication-related side effects.
    collaborating with the healthcare team on the planning of the discharge.
    educating patients and their families about surgical procedures and post-surgery care and answering questions.
    Keeping up with and refreshing patient documents, clinical diagrams, and wellbeing records.
    adhering to standards, protocols, and best nursing practices.

What do medical-surgical nurses do?
Among the duties are:

  • – Taking in, transporting, and releasing patients; – Keeping an eye on the patient’s vital signs; – Giving medications; – Using and maintaining medical equipment like IV lines, feeding tubes, catheters, oxygen tubes, and so on.
    – Documenting patient care, needs, and progress – Communicating and working with the care team – Executing patient orders and care plans – Educating and supporting patients and their families – Running and/or ordering tests and assessments – Completing the education, reports, and charting that the facility requires – Working with wound care (especially if the facility does not have a wound care RN) – Assisting with pain control

Is becoming a medical-surgical nurse difficult?

  • No. This position is frequently filled by newly graduated nurses.
