Each year, ICN creates and distributes materials and evidence to honor International Nurses’ Day (IND).

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has marked this day since 1965. Dorothy Sutherland, a United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare employee, proposed in 1953 for President Dwight D. Eisenhower to designate a “Nurse’ Day,” but he was opposed.

In January 1974, the date of May 12 was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, the pioneer of modern nursing. The International Nurses’ Day Kit is created and distributed annually by ICN. Nurses everywhere can use the educational and public information materials in the kit. National Student Nurses’ Day was established on May 8 of each year beginning in 1998.
