A nurse tech, also known as a nursing assistant, is a healthcare professional who provides basic nursing care and support to patients in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and other healthcare settings. Nurse techs work under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) or licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and their duties may include:
- Assisting with patient care: Nurse techs help patients with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting. They also help with mobility and positioning, and may assist with feeding and hydration.
- Monitoring vital signs: Nurse techs monitor patients’ vital signs, such as blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate, and report any changes to the RN or LPN.
- Assisting with medical procedures: Nurse techs may assist with medical procedures, such as inserting catheters, changing wound dressings, and administering medications.
- Documenting patient information: Nurse techs document patients’ vital signs, intake and output, and other information in their medical records.
- Providing emotional support: Nurse techs provide emotional support to patients and their families, and may offer guidance and counseling.
To become a nurse tech, individuals typically need to complete a state-approved nursing assistant training program and pass a competency exam. Some states may also require nurse techs to be certified in CPR and basic life support. Working as a nurse tech can be a rewarding and fulfilling career, and can also serve as a pathway to further education and career advancement in nursing.
