One of the two most popular paths to a good nursing job is the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). The Associates in Nursing degree is the other option. What is the difference between an ADN and a BSN education? Can a BSN help you land a better job?

FOUR-YEAR COLLEGE VS. COMMUNITY COLLEGE NURSING PROGRAMS

Community colleges are very different from four-year colleges. Residential campuses are common at many four-year institutions, where students live in dorms or nearby apartments. There is little room for flexibility in the schedules of the classes.

On the other hand, the community college system was established to assist in the provision of education to the community as a whole. Many of these individuals are adults, professionals with requirements for continuing education, and community students seeking highly specialized career or vocational training without a great deal of academic instruction. At the CC level, which is the Associates Degree in Nursing, practical, hands-on skills are prioritized over academic theory or didactic instruction. Four-year nursing programs include:

  • Universities
  • Colleges

There will be more liberal arts requirements for nursing majors at smaller colleges than at larger institutions. You may be required to take a battery of humanities, art, English/Composition, foreign language, physical education/health, and other subjects in addition to the standard nursing curriculum. Nursing students in a four-year program split their study time between hands-on practical skills and clinicals, as opposed to the community college nursing program. Curriculum for a four-year nursing school:

  • Nursing theory
  • Sociology/Anthropology
  • Pharmacology math
  • Anatomy/Physiology
  • Diet/Nutrition
  • Evidence-based research
  • Women’s Health
  • Child-bearing family
  • Geriatric nursing
  • Public/Community health nursing
  • and more

Students who attend a university increasingly have the opportunity to complete a portion of their coursework online through sophisticated distance learning environments. This kind of student engagement is uncommon at four-year colleges. Being present in person to complete your clinical study is your greatest advantage. In accordance with faculty guidance, nursing students who may study coursework from home must plan to schedule a block of time on campus or negotiate a clinical experience close to home.

THE FOUR-YEAR COLLEGE EXPERIENCE

Lastly, college-age students frequently prefer residential campuses over community colleges or large universities. You will have a more memorable experience, smaller classes, a more cohesive nursing curriculum, and more opportunities for one-on-one guidance.
