On November 8, 1944, the nursing profession in South Africa gained self-regulation. The Council held its first meeting, and registration that could be enforced legally was completed. The memorandum presented to the Commission of Health Services by Sharley Cribb, the Organizing Secretary of the South African Trained Nurses Association, and pressure from the nursing profession fueled this.
What is the South African Nursing Council?
- In the Republic of South Africa, it is the responsibility of the South African Nursing Council to establish and uphold standards for nursing education and practice. It was established as an independent, financially self-supporting statutory body by the Nursing Act of 1944 (Act No. 45 of 1944) and operates under the Nursing Act of 2005 (Act No. 33 of 2005).
Setting and Monitoring of Standards
- The Nursing Council is responsible for establishing, enhancing, and regulating the requirements, standards, and caliber of nursing education and training in accordance with Section 3 of the Nursing Act of 2005.
- The Nursing Act’s Section 4 specifies requirements for nursing examinations, diploma, and certificate issuance, monitoring of evaluations made by certified institutions, and accreditation and inspection of nursing education institutions.
- The Nursing Act of 2005’s Section 58(1)(f) allows for the creation of rules pertaining to the requirements that must be met in order for a person to be registered as a nursing practitioner (education and training regulations).
In order to monitor nursing standards, the South African Nursing Council:
- registering nurse practitioners and granting them licenses to practice nursing;
- accreditation of new schools and programs for nursing education;
- clinical settings and nursing education facilities are inspected;
- reevaluating nursing education and training on a regular basis to meet requirements in the Republic of South Africa; and
- advising and directing the nursing community with regard to the application of nursing education and training policies
