nursing course 2024-2025
The duty of a nurse as a qualified health care provider is to provide excellent and selfless care to the sick. Below is a description of the post-matriculation requirements for this career path.
A qualified nurse is just as crucial a healthcare professional as a certified doctor when it comes to the internal workings of a typical hospital.
For someone who wishes to set selfishness aside and prioritize altruism in caring for others, nursing may be a good career choice.
However, there are a number of requirements that must be met before becoming a qualified nurse. To begin, there are three types of nursing qualifications that can be pursued:
- A Senior Certificate in Nursing
- A Diploma in Nursing
- A Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- (There is also a Baccalaureus Curationis (BCur) degree that is offered as an alternative).
The following are the prerequisites for each of these course options:
Higher Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing (1 year):
- At the end of their matric academic year, students must have obtained their National Senior Certificate (NSC) with an overall NSC score of 16 points, including at least 40% in English or home language and at least 50% in Life Science or Biology.
Advanced/Diploma in Nursing (3 years):
- A matric education standard is required, as well as passing Mathematics, English, a First/Home Language, Life Orientation, and Life Science. Finally, the student must register with the South African Nursing Council as a nurse.
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (4 years):
- Students must have at least a matric education standard and have passed Mathematics, English, a First/Home Language, Life Orientation, and Life Science. Finally, similar to the Diploma enrolment requirements, the student must register as a nurse with the South African Nursing Council.
