If you’ve always imagined yourself as someone who helps and cares for others and aspired to be your own version of a hero, nursing is the career path for you. In South Africa, where the nursing industry is rapidly expanding, it is easier than in most other countries to find work as a nurse. Nurses are also not required to work in a hospital; they can work anywhere, including for a large corporation that requires the services of a nurse.
Nurses fall into three categories: Enrolled Nurses who provide limited nursing care, Enrolled Nursing Auxiliaries who perform basic procedures and care for patients, and Registered Nurses or Nursing Sisters who carry out the duties of a nurse include:
- a four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing (BCur, or Bachelor of Nursing Science, Education, and Administration), a three-year diploma, a one-year higher certificate in auxiliary nursing, or a one-year postgraduate advanced diploma in nursing and midwifery in addition to your degree or diploma.
After receiving your certification, you will be required to perform one year of mandatory community service and register with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) by passing an exam.
