Learning in practice

  • You will spend up to 50% of your Edge Hill University nursing program in a placement area, but you will also participate in virtual and simulation-based learning opportunities. You will be able to apply the theoretical aspects of nursing you learned in school through all of this learning to your nursing practice.
  • The university aims to provide students with the best possible experience while expanding their knowledge base in a variety of secure learning environments. The university encourages students to identify and pursue additional learning opportunities themselves while also taking the initiative to build relationships with educators in practice, such as Practice Supervisors, Practice Assessors, and Practice Education Facilitators (PEFs). These opportunities may include observing another member of the multidisciplinary team working in that practice area or making brief visits to areas of interest that have a clinical connection to a particular nursing field of study.
  • The Faculty collaborates closely with colleagues from the NHS, private, voluntary, independent, and social care sectors of practice. Medical wards, surgical wards, nursing and care homes, prisons, high-security environments, community settings, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), elderly care facilities, schools, and pre-school nurseries are just a few of the diverse and extensive learning environments found in these sectors. These practice learning environments can be found all over the North West and nearby regions. Because your practice experiences may be distributed across the entire geographical area, but primarily within the Cheshire and Merseyside region, we would encourage you to become familiar with this extensive field.
  • You will be supported by Practice Supervisors and evaluated by a Practice Assessor, typically from that organization, during scheduled practice learning placements for learners. In addition, students are assigned an Academic Assessor whose job it is to compile and verify the student’s accomplishments in terms of proficiency and program outcomes in the academic setting for each component of the program. In addition, the university has a Practice Education Team, which consists of dedicated and experienced academic staff members with a focus on practice. They support all practice learning environments to ensure that students successfully attain the required competencies in practice learning. During your practice experiences, you may interact with Lecturers in Practice Learning to discuss your progress in practice learning and how well you are settling in.
  • A Practice Supervisor and an Assessor will evaluate your progress throughout each practice experience. As you progress through the program, you will also be encouraged to perform increasingly complex tasks and develop your skills and self-assurance.
  • All of your practice learning experiences, which include practice assessments and are required for award and registration with the NMC, will take place in audited learning environments that comply with the NMC Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment.
