Nursing is a noble and selfless profession in which a licensed healthcare professional is responsible for the care of the sick. The post-matriculation requirements for this career path are listed below.

  • When it comes to the day-to-day operations of a typical hospital, a licensed nurse plays a role that is just as crucial as that of a licensed doctor.
  • A career in nursing might be a good fit for someone who wants to put their own interests aside and put the needs of others ahead of their own.

Nevertheless, in order to become a licensed nurse, a number of steps must be taken. To begin, there are three distinct nursing qualifications that can be pursued:

  • A Senior Certificate in Nursing
  • A Diploma in Nursing
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • (There is also a Baccalaureus Curationis (BCur) degree that is offered as an alternative).

Following are the prerequisites for each of these course options:

Higher Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing (1 year):

  • The student must have earned their National Senior Certificate (NSC) at the conclusion of their matriculating academic year with an overall NSC score of 16 points, at least 40% in English or their native tongue, and at least 50% in life sciences or biology.

Advanced/Diploma in Nursing (3 years):

  • The student must have completed Math, English, a First or Home Language, Life Orientation, and Life Science and have at least a matric education standard. The student must then register with the South African Nursing Council to become a nurse.

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (4 years):

  • The student must have completed Math, English, a First or Home Language, Life Orientation, and Life Science and have at least a matric education standard. Last but not least, the student must register with the South African Nursing Council as a nurse, just like the requirements for enrolling in the diploma program.

What Qualifications Do I Need to Become a Nurse?

You can accomplish one of the following in order to become a nurse:

  • a four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing (BCur– Bachelor of Nursing Science, Education & Administration)
  • a three-year diploma
  • a one-year higher certificate in auxiliary nursing
  • one-year postgraduate advanced diploma in nursing and midwifery on top of your degree or diploma.

You must register with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) after earning your qualification.

You have the option of finishing your education at a private nursing college or at a public tertiary institution. The diplomas and degrees offered by these private colleges, such as Mediclinic, Netcare Education, and Life College, are comparable to those provided by technological universities.

What does the course look like?

  • This course will teach you how to function as a clinically focused, knowledgeable, competent, and innovative nurse. At the end of this course, you will have specialized as a nurse, midwife, or apprentice, and you will be able to give your patients scientific, well-informed care.

Entry Requirements

To enroll in this course, you must possess a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or an equivalent qualification at exit levels 3 or 4, depending on the institution. However, for the BCur, it is not as important as it is for you to have taken math or physical science courses. You’ll also require:

  • English (50-59%)
  • First additional or home language (50-59%)
  • Four other subjects (50-59%)
  • Life Orientation (50-59%)
