In South Africa, nursing is one of the most well-known occupations. Because they provide community care, nurses play a crucial role in the health industry.

In South Africa, there are various cadres of nurses based on the length and depth of training received prior to entry into the healthcare system.

You must have completed a nursing school in order to join the nursing profession in South Africa. The majority of nursing schools are owned by universities, and students receive their education in hospitals or other well-equipped establishments.

You need a good high school grade if you want to study nursing at a university or in a nursing school. The first important step is to determine which cadre of nurses you want and the best program to follow in order to achieve your goal. This can be accomplished by doing everything in your power to achieve high scores on the NSC exam in areas such as English, mathematics, your first or native language, life orientation, and life sciences. The nursing programs that are available in South Africa are as follows:

  • Senior Certificate in Nursing
  • Diploma in Nursing
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Some Universities offer undergraduate degrees called Baccalaureus Curationis (BCur) as an alternative.

The requirements to study each of these course options are as follows:

Higher Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing (1 year):

  • Student must have acquired their National Senior Certificate (NSC) at the end of their matric academic year with an overall NSC score of 16 points including at least 40% in English or their home language and at least 50% for Life Science or Biology

Advanced/Diploma in Nursing (3 years):

  • The student must have passed Math, English, a First/Home Language, Life Orientation, and Life Science at the matriculation level. The student must also register with the South African Nursing Council to become a nurse.

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (4 years):

  • The student must have passed Math, English, a First/Home Language, Life Orientation, and Life Science at the matriculation level. Lastly, the student must register with the South African Nursing Council as a nurse, just like the Diploma enrollment requirements.
