You might be wondering what you’ll need in your work bag if you’re just starting out as a nurse or a nursing student. What do you bring to show that you are a nurse, in addition to your personal belongings?

If you want to do your job well, you must have these nursing supplies.

The most frequently carried items by nurses in their bags are:

Stethoscope

  • One of the most essential tools in the trade is this. This instrument is used by nurses to check for proper function by listening to the heart, veins, and intestines. Here are the six best stethoscopes to buy, according to Best Stethoscope Reviews. You are undoubtedly aware that it is one of the most essential instruments for a patient’s evaluation.
Littmann is one of the most popular brands of stethoscopes today. The most basic design is available, as is the most advanced one.

Books

  • A helpful resource that lists common medications and diseases. MIMS delivers prescription and generic medicine information, clinical recommendations, and patient guidance. Swearingen’s Manual of Medical-Surgical Nursing, a comprehensive reference to providing optimal patient care, can also be used by nurses.

Scissors and Micropore Medical Tape

  • Bandage scissors are used to cut medical gauze, dressings, and bandages, among other things. Nurses should keep them in their pockets for emergency usage, particularly for wound care. Micropore tape is very useful and should be readily available in case your patient accidentally pulls his or her IV.

Lotion and Hand Sanitizer

Nurses never forget to wash their hands numerous times during the day, allowing their skin to dry. As a result, having lotion on their baggage is essential for keeping their skin in good shape. Meanwhile, the sanitizer aids nurses in avoiding bacteria and other contagious substances.

  • Six saline flushes
  • Retractable pens
  • Sanitary items – gauze, sterilized mask and gloves, cotton balls
  • OTC pharmacy items (cold medicines, ibuprofen, and other emergency meds)
  • Small notebook – for taking notes from doctors and observations of your patients.
  • Thermometer
  • Tongue depressor
  • Tourniquet
  • BP apparatus
  • Watch with seconds hand

According to Nurse Nacole’s website, she keeps a drug handbook, intravenous medications, a makeup mirror, a tape measure, a towel, lotion, wipes, a four-in-one pen, and a homemade cheat sheet on hand for her patients.

She also has a box of batteries, tapes, a pack of gum, a toothbrush, sanitizer, coupons, snacks, an umbrella, a stethoscope, pens, a folder containing her report sheet and information sheet, tampons, a charger, a name tag, an ID, a makeup bag, eye drops, lotion, hair clips, highlighter, a pen light, and a journal in her What’s In My Work Bag YouTube video.

So, What’s in My Bag?

In my bag, I keep a 4-in-1 pen, a highlighter, IDs, bandages, a journal to jot down new information as I surf the web, my phone with medical e-books and a medical dictionary, and other items such as alcohol, sanitizer, over-the-counter medications (such as paracetamol, cold medicine, pain relievers, multivitamins), handkerchiefs, floss, toothbrush, nail file, band aids, and food.

Aside from my understanding of providing exceptional patient care, I also bring items to assist me in getting through my shift. Most typical nursing supplies are available in a portable kit to make things more compact and easier for a nurse to access. Sizes and styles are evolving as new methods of making a nurse’s shift simpler.

These are just a handful of the necessary nursing supplies that a new nurse requires.
