Multiple methods of knowing make up nursing knowledge. Some patterns of knowledge are: 1) empirics, the nursing science; 2) aesthetics, the art of nursing; 3) personal nursing knowledge; and 4) ethics, the moral nursing knowledge component” (Carper, 1978, p. 23). Elhammoumi & Kellam (2017) say that visual or written art can be used to show human health or illness and help nursing students develop personal and aesthetic ways of knowing or understanding. 2001 (Wikstrom). Arts-based approaches facilitate the “creative process of discovery,” allowing students to consider a wide range of conditions, situations, and experiences while also encouraging student reflection and artistic expression (Carper, 1978, p. 26). Students engage in critical reflection as a result of the arts-inspired teaching methods, which can lead to the acquisition of new information or improved comprehension among nursing students.

Rieger and others 2016) added that ABP addresses unknowing, emancipatory, and sociopolitical conceptualizations of Carper’s ways of knowing. A nurse’s openness to learning about their patients’ subjective experiences and awareness that they cannot comprehend their patient when they first meet are both examples of conscious unknowing (Heath, 1998). According to Chinn and Kramer (2018), p. 5, emancipatory knowing is “the praxis of nursing,” or the “human capacity to be aware of and critically reflect on the social, cultural, and political status quo.” According to Hageorn (2004), Praxis is “a synthesis of thoughtful reflection, caring, and action within a theory and research-driven practice.” Students can benefit from ABP’s opportunities for in-depth reflection and praxis support. Take, for instance, Van Bewer et al. 2021) suggest that Indigenous sharing circles and theatre are particularly helpful in raising awareness of and critical reflection on racism, which is crucial to praxis. Understanding how the nurse-patient relationship and nursing are situated within a sociopolitical context is what White (1995) refers to as the “context of nursing.” The rich and contextual learning experiences that ABP creates can aid in the development of social-political knowledge.
