nursing programs
Accrediting nursing education institutions (NEIs) and their training programs are one of the Nursing Council’s responsibilities. The legislation grants the council authority to perform these responsibilities.
Under Section 42 of the Nursing Act of 2005, it is against the law for any institution in South Africa to offer education and/or training for the purpose of qualifying a person to practice as a nurse or a midwife unless both the institution and the educational program are accredited by the South African Nursing Council.
The Council is defending its rights by carrying out these duties;
- the right of the general public to be treated by a nurse or midwife who has undergone a rigorous training program designed to prepare them to provide competent, compassionate, and ethically sound nursing care; and the Learner to receive instruction that satisfies all requirements for practitioner registration in South Africa.
llegal Institutions / Programmes
- Students must make certain that both the training program (course) and the institution where they will be trained as nurses or midwives are accredited by the South African Nursing Council. The Nursing Council will not acknowledge the learner’s training if either is NOT ACCREDITED. After completing the training, the learner will not be able to practice in South Africa or anywhere else. The learner’s time and money spent on education and training will be in vain.
- By giving their programs obscure names like “Pre-nursing,” these illegal institutions or programs that run illegal programs often try to protect themselves by promising prospective students that taking such a course will guarantee entry into further nursing education (at the same or another nursing education institution). There is neither a guarantee nor a provision for such programs in the Nursing Act of 2005 or its regulations. Each nursing education and training program has minimum entry requirements that can be found in the education and training regulations, which can be found on this website.
- Complaints and reports about illegal institutions and/or programs in South Africa are handled by the Nursing Council.
- All allegations are looked into, and the South African Police Services (SAPS) are asked to help shut down the institution or program if it is found that it is operating illegally or running an illegal program. In accordance with the Nursing Act of 2005, it is a felony to operate or offer such a program. As a result, SAPS is involved in this process.
- Please provide complete information to the Council if you are aware of any institution that you believe is providing an illegal program or operating illegally so that the facts can be checked.
