The primary role of an occupational health nurse is to assess and monitor the health and safety of employees in the workplace. Other responsibilities of an OHN may include conducting health assessments, providing education and training on occupational health and safety issues, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to manage work-related injuries and illnesses.
To become an occupational health nurse, individuals must first become licensed registered nurses (RNs) by completing a nursing degree program and passing the NCLEX-RN exam. They may then choose to pursue additional education and certification in occupational health nursing through programs offered by the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN) or other professional organizations.
Occupational health nursing is a growing field with increasing demand for skilled practitioners who can promote healthy and safe workplaces. However, OHNs must also stay up-to-date with changing regulations and guidelines, as well as emerging health hazards in the workplace. They must also possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with other healthcare professionals, employees, and employers to maintain a healthy work environment.
