A practical nursing program is a training program that prepares students to become licensed practical nurses (LPNs) or licensed vocational nurses (LVNs). LPNs/LVNs provide basic nursing care in a variety of healthcare settings, such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics, and home health agencies.
Practical nursing programs typically take 12 to 18 months to complete and include both classroom instruction and clinical practice. The curriculum may include courses in:
- Anatomy and physiology
- Pharmacology
- Medical-surgical nursing
- Obstetrics and gynecology
- Pediatrics
- Mental health nursing
- Nursing ethics and legal issues
Students in practical nursing programs also receive training in nursing skills such as medication administration, wound care, and patient assessment. In addition to classroom instruction, students must complete a certain number of clinical hours in various healthcare settings to gain hands-on experience.
Upon completion of a practical nursing program, graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) to become licensed as an LPN/LVN. Once licensed, LPNs/LVNs work under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) and perform a variety of nursing tasks, such as taking vital signs, administering medications, and providing basic patient care.
