- Administering medications: Radiology nurses may administer medications, such as sedatives or contrast agents, to patients undergoing radiology procedures.
- Monitoring patients during procedures: Radiology nurses monitor patients during radiology procedures to ensure their safety and comfort. They may check vital signs, assess for adverse reactions, and administer additional medications as needed.
- Educating patients and families: Radiology nurses play a key role in educating patients and their families about radiology procedures and how to care for themselves after the procedure is complete.
- Documenting patient care: Radiology nurses are responsible for documenting patient care, including procedures performed, medications administered, and any adverse reactions or complications that occur.
Becoming a radiology nurse requires specialized training and education. In the United States, most radiology nurses hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and have passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). In addition, some radiology nurses may choose to obtain certification in radiology nursing through organizations such as the Radiologic Nursing Certification Board (RNCB).
Working as a radiology nurse can be both challenging and rewarding. Radiology nurses must be knowledgeable about radiation safety and be able to work with complex imaging equipment. They must also be able to provide emotional support to patients who may be anxious or fearful about their procedure.
