- In the 1930s, the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) established a mission at Rietvlei. Soon, it became clear that a health service was needed. Sister Vorster, for example, was a missionary who first carried out medical work in a rondavel. Viljoen and De Kock in the 1940s. Rietvlei received periodic visits from doctors from St. Margaret’s Hospital and Isilimela, but the demand for a resident doctor soon became apparent. Rev. B. Wooding inaugurated a 36-bed missionary hospital on December 1, 1956, and Dr. Gerrit ter Haar, a resident physician from the Netherlands, arrived on the same day.
- Dr. ter Haar worked by himself for ten years. A children’s ward and a tuberculosis section were constructed during this time (1959). The S.A. Nursing Council approved the training of auxiliary nurses in 1962.
- The staff also included more doctors. Dr. Sam Fehrson joined in 1966, and Dr. Alec Stewart joined in 1968. Community service became a major focus over the next ten years, and clinics were established throughout the district. In 1968, midwifery training received recognition.
- In addition to medical staff, the hospital currently employs numerous skilled and semiskilled workers, domestic drivers, and laborers. Strong personal relationships and a sense of teamwork among Rietvlei Hospital’s staff members, many of whom have been with the hospital for more than a decade, are perhaps the hospital’s most notable characteristics. These relationships have developed over time and are bolstered by the stability of the senior staff, who ensured work continuity. Dr. ter Haar, who has been here for 30 years, exemplifies this stability.

Rietvlei Hospital Nursing entry requirements
To enter the NVC at NQF Level 2, you must meet the following requirements
- A year-end report for Grades 9, 10, 11, or 12,
- An NQF Level 1 qualification,
- An approved bridging program designed specifically to get you into NQF Level 2
- an RPL examination to satisfy the fundamental prerequisites for NQF Level 2 access.
How to apply
- To obtain the application forms, visit the school’s official website. Payment of the registration fee (required for South African and international applicants); a certified copy of your photo identification; If you are an international applicant, you must provide a certified copy of your ID and your passport number before your application will be processed.
Results of the test: Grade 12 final grades (if available). Your grade 11 results are crucial to your application if you are currently in 12th grade. Therefore, keep it in your possession.
