rpn nurse 2024-2025
RPN stands for Registered Practical Nurse. In some Canadian provinces, this role is known as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). RPNs/LPNs work under the direction of registered nurses (RNs) and physicians to provide basic nursing care to patients.
RPNs/LPNs perform a variety of duties, including:
- Assessing patients’ health status and reporting any changes to the RN or physician
- Administering medications and treatments as prescribed
- Assisting patients with personal care, such as bathing and dressing
- Monitoring patients’ vital signs and reporting any abnormalities
- Educating patients and their families about their health conditions and care plans
- Collaborating with other members of the healthcare team, such as RNs, physicians, and allied health professionals, to provide comprehensive care to patients.
RPNs/LPNs work in a variety of healthcare settings, such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics, and community health centers. They may specialize in areas such as pediatrics, geriatrics, or mental health.
To become an RPN/LPN, individuals must complete a diploma or certificate program in practical nursing and pass a licensing examination. RPN/LPN programs typically take 1-2 years to complete and include both classroom instruction and clinical experience. Upon graduation, individuals can apply for licensure as an RPN/LPN and begin working in the field.
